Making Changes in the Community
Aim and Objectives of the Forum • To create local learning opportunities. • To identify local community needs and to take action. • To influence policy making and service delivery. • To have a voice in the community and to make a difference in women’s lives.
How we started the Forum? By linking with the local community projects Open Discussion with these projects 3 open meetings involving the city council By doing capacity building workshop with women in the community Undertaking research work in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University re access to employment for BME women
Who are the members of the Forum? • Women from the community of all ages • Women from different ethnicity backgrounds • Women who suffer disadvantage • Women who want to create a difference in policy making and service delivery
Discussions that we have in the Forum Issues regarding: • Employment • Racism and Discrimination • Family and community pressure • Cultural issues • Lack of support • Education • Citizenship • Domestic Violence • Language Barrier • Lack of confidence • Health Issues • Should British Muslim Women Remove Their • Veil ?(Discussion on Jack Straw’s comment)
Our Recent Work The members of the forum are undertaking courses called “Aspects of Citizenship” Level 2. This course will help the members to be able to : • Apply knowledge with underpinning comprehension in a number of areas. • Make comparisons • Interpret available information • Demonstrate a range of skills
Our Future Work • To influence decision making at all levels • To represent the views of women from diverse communities • To make sure that their voice is being heard • To build the capacity of women to participate in civic decision making |
